Functional and decorative ceramics inspired by nature, informed by science.

ECL_2detail.jpg

As a scientific illustrator I am always looking for that thing the thing that characterizes the species I am trying to portray. As a potter I love exploring the way corners and edges define volume and I struggle with finding ways to add my illustrations to my ceramics; my goal is for the form and surface to work together.

The Chesapeake Project is an attempt to portray the food web of the Bay using functional ceramics; integrating my training as a Scientific Illustrator and my love of ceramics.  I like the idea of being able to eat the subject of the illustrations the food is served from, I also like the ability of the flat trays and plates to layer much as the animals in plants in the bay live in layers.  I will keep updating this as I add work and hang small portions.
